One of the most asked questions we get when it comes to beard care is:
What's the difference between beard oil and beard balm, and which one is better?
Aside from the obvious (liquid vs. solid) both are made with similar ingredients with beard balm having a few extra benefits.
When you dive into it the answer really depends on a few important factors:
1) Your beard length;
2) Your facial hair and skin type;
3) And your product preference.
A general rule that applies to all bearded guys is the longer and thicker your beard is the more attention and maintenance it will require, meaning your beard will need extra help to maintain its overall health.
For shorter beard styles we recommend an all-natural beard oil to implement in your daily routine.
It's important to note that all-natural and organic ingredients are recommended over synthetic ingredients since they could reduce the chances of skin irritation, possible inflammation and do loads better at promoting beard growth naturally.
As you become more educated about beard care products you will find out that all-natural beard oils and balms are formulated with carrier oils which bring plenty of hair and skincare benefits. As a result your beard will be softer, better hydrated and looking its best.
Even if you are just maintaining a nice light stubble, beard oil will provide the nourishing effects your skin needs to calm down any itchiness and dryness you likely will experience.
So if you are serious about your beard looks, then a solid beard oil is essential.
For longer beard styles, (over an inch) you will likely start to experience dryer brittle hair, possible breakage, and stray away hairs. To tame all of this a beard balm can do wonders for you.
Beard balm contains one or two of the main butters known to have major benefits in the hair and skincare space: shea butter, cocoa butter and or mango butter. All three proven to be beneficial for your skin and overall beard health.
A balm has a deeper conditioning effect on your facial hair than a beard oil does and it helps lock in moisture longer preventing dryness and brittleness.
There are also a solid mix of other carrier oils in the balm that bring their own goodness to the table. Carrier oils such as hemp seed oil, sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, and or coconut oil all bring pluses to the table. As a result your beard will feel and look healthier. Fellas trust us, a well maintained clean beard is greatly appreciated!
Along with its hair and skin benefits the balm also provides some beard control keeping those stray aways in check.
I myself use both products to ensure my beard and skin underneath get the proper hydration and moisture. It's even more important during the winter months when your beard and skin are prone to dryness as the colder air sucks moisture.
But do keep in mind that everyone is different. Some might prefer using the oil as it will be enough for their beard style, skin and look. So experiment and find what works best for you.
TIP: Slowly work yourself up. Start off with a few drops of beard oil and see how your skin and beard responds. If you feel your beard is still not soft enough or still a little dry then increase the amount of beard oil moderately or jump right into the balm.
