22 Badass Beards From The Movies
Beards just ooze superstar charisma. They can dramatically take your face and overall look from everyday zero to action hero, real quick.
And with the wide variety of different beard styles that one can grow on West Island, only a handful have made it onto the silver screen.
Below we highlight our favourite beards from the movies.
Let’s grow...
1. Chia Hui Liu – Kill Bill
Chia Hui Liu, who played Pai Mei in Kill Bill, is rocking perhaps one of the most astounding beards you will ever see. Not only is it a shocking shade of white, but the long, flowing beard strands tie into his bushy, well-groomed eyebrows. He looks every bit as lethal as you’d expect him to be in this movie.
2. Chuck Norris
There are a lot of Chuck Norris jokes making their way around the internet, such as there being no chin behind his beard, only another fist. This martial arts master sure is impressive, but so is his beard! Many people try and pull off its ruggedness, but only Chuck Norris himself can really do this beard type any justice.
3. Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln
If anyone can pull off a beard as impressively as Abraham Lincoln, it’s Daniel-Day Lewis. The disheveled goatee and short chin strap transform this actor into an entirely different person.
4. David Spade – Joe Dirt
No one else really could have pulled the role of Joe Dirt off as spectacularly as David Spade, especially with his facial hair. The sideburns and goatee paint a stereotypical redneck picture that few others would be able to master.
5. Hugh Jackman - Wolverine
Who would have thought that 19th-century mutton chops would make such a massive comeback? The mutton-chop bearded look, known as the Wolverine beard, may have just become a new favourite for men around the world. Thanks, Hugh Jackman.
6. Chewbacca – Star Wars (1977)
Okay, so we’re cheating a little bit with this one because it’s hil-hairious. Can you really call Chewbacca’s facial hair a beard? Well, if you did a little bit of trimming, it would definitely count!
7. Johnny Depp – Pirates of the Caribbean
There are no two ways about it – Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow Beard in Pirates of the Caribbean started something. There was something truly remarkable and rebellious about the double-plaited soul patch. Maybe it was the addition of the beads and the occasional beard twizzling.
8. Laurence Tureaud (Mr. T) – Rocky III
It takes a particular person to pull off the beard that Clubber Lang had in Rocky III, and Laurence Tureaud, or Mr. T, was the person for the job. We can only assume that keeping it trimmed and in shape while matching his mohawk was a full-time job in itself.
9. Leonardo DiCaprio – Django Unchained
There were undoubtedly plenty of highlights in the film Django Unchained, but the beard that Leonardo DiCaprio sported as Calvin Candie was near the top. The sculptured goatee was representative of his sharp character.
10. Sacha Baron Cohen – The Dictator
Is it a toilet brush? Is it a dustbuster? No, it’s Sacha Baron Cohen’s beard in The Dictator! Wild, unruly, and lacking a decent pair of scissors for what looks like years, it’s clear to see his beard was as erratic as his character.
11. Sean Connery – First Knight
We’re still getting used to seeing Sean Connery with a beard, but he definitely pulls off mutton chops well in The First Knight. It also sets the scene for seeing him with beards in several other movies.
12. Sir Ian McKellen – The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Get ready to put on sunglasses, because Sir Ian McKellen’s beard in The Lord of the Rings is one of the starkest shade of white you will ever see. But that’s not even the best part; he pairs it beautifully with long, white hair that looks like it should be in a shampoo commercial.
13. Wes Bentley – The Hunger Games
As we all know, beards can be an art form. When Wes Bentley played the role of Seneca Crane in The Hunger Games, that was pretty obvious. The eye for detail and exquisite shaping reflected his powerful role beautifully.
14. Will Ferrell – Zoolander
Most people won’t be in too much of a hurry to replicate Mugatu’s hair and beard styling in Zoolander. Still, it’s not hard to deny that the little white beard and curly hair suits his role as an evil villain.
15. Zach Galifianakis – The Hangover
Now, this is a beard we can all get on board with, especially if you don’t feel like shaving any time soon. The more unruly and unkempt your beard looks, the easier it will be to convince people that you’re just trying to look like Alan Garner from The Hangover.
16. Chris Hemsworth – Thor
We don’t know how he did it, but Chris Hemsworth in the film Thor managed to make a rugged, scruffy beard look manicured and dreamy. It forms an imperfect circle around his mouth and seems to meet seamlessly at his sideburns.
Fortunately, this look is supposedly achievable at home. Just use your beard trimmer every two or three days.
17. Samuel L. Jackson – Pulp Fiction
Samuel L. Jackson playing Jules Winnfield is something that every beard lover has to see at least once. While he only has a small soul patch, the fact that it’s braided adds a new layer of excitement that adds to his character’s appeal.
18. Gerard Butler – 300
If you want to take some time off trimming your beard, then just tell people you’re going for the King Leonidas look played by Gerard Butler in 300. This incredible beard is bushy, rough, untamed, and, somehow, tidy. Don’t ask us; it just looks badass.
19. Jeff Bridges – The Big Lebowski
Goatees are definitely not as popular as they used to be, but if any man can bring them back, it’s Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey in The Big Lebowski. The neat, gray-speckled beard gives the character a lot of much-needed ‘tude. Perhaps that’s why he’s called, “The Dude.”
20. Keanu Reeves - John Wick
Keanu Reeves played the role of ex-hitman in John Wick, and no part of his performance was disappointing. And guess what, neither was his beard. The dark, mysteriously shaped beard, is a handsome contrast to his usually patchy style he rocks in everyday life.
21. Will Ferrell – Anchorman
At the beginning of Anchorman, Will Ferrell as news anchor Ron Burgundy sports a very trim and well-manicured mustache. It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s okay. However, when he becomes unemployed, he transitions from well-manicured to wild. His large, bushy beard is unkempt, untamed, and strangely, dripping in milk.
22. Sir Michael Gambon – Harry Potter
Sir Michael Gambon plays the role of Albus Dumbledore, a wise, powerful wizard and the headmaster of Hogwarts. His beard certainly adds a lot of power and age-old wisdom to that look. The full, grey and white beard tied in a front ponytail probably won’t take off as a trend, but there’s no denying it’s as classy as they get.
